Well the Phantom is a lower role than Valjean. I don't have the range of the Phantom but I do for Valjean. Jean Valjean: "One of the rangiest tenor roles in popular musical theater canon" Vocal range: Low A to High A (above Middle C). Here's Hugh singing tenor, it's not bad, but it's just not Alfie Boe We know Hugh is committed to vocal training so I'm hoping he'll be better than the above video. But he's still not Colm or Alfie. Here's Taylor *trying* to sing Broadway ... owch my ears ...

Okay, I see your point about Taylor. I don't think it's as ear-damaging as you might think, I honestly don't, but she really should go into training if she wants to play Eponine. She really should. And about Hugh... we can't all be like... STOP LND!

After watching that first video I can see him working well for the less songy songs (I know what I mean!!). Also, he can also probably get away with having a rougher voice due to the character. I can see him working well in the role. I still hate the people who are casting because i think they're choosing people for the wrong reasons but hopefully the majority of them will be good enough.
As for Taylor, I agree with the ouch. I think the problem is she has no (natural) vibretto so strong notes are just being forced. I don't even think she's that good at belting. I'm not sure if she has enough time to get her voice to an okay standard even if she goes into intensive training and I don't know if she'd drop everything else to do that either. I must admit that she's the cast member I'm most concerned about which is a shame because she's a talented pop singer. I hope she proves me wrong!
Edit: Just played that to my dad who's even nastier and more opinionated than I am and his response was: "Hmm, she sounds like a strangled frog in a cardboard box" Dunno where the cardboard box thing came from!

Your father really voices his opinions openly, doesn't he? Well, I sort of can see where he's coming from. I am beginning to see why everybody are so against her as Eponine. By the way, can somebody find a better version of the song she attempts on singing? It's a really good song.

Unless I'm very much mistaken (which I may be!) it's a take off of Tonight from West Side Story. I don't know West Side Story well at all but this is the film version:
Dunno if people have favourite singers for this or something though! I need to get round to listening to West Side Story ^^

I just showed my sister the clip of Taylor singing Tonight. And her reaction was "WTF? !!!!! OMG" She sings in a choir and knows what she's talking about, so I suppose I should trust her reaction on this one. Edit: my sister thinks it isn't bad, it's just strange.

Unless I'm very much mistaken (which I may be!) it's a take off of Tonight from West Side Story. I don't know West Side Story well at all but this is the film version: Movie version of West Side Story is a perfect example because Natalie Wood (Maria) couldn't sing so Marnie Nixon dubbed her songs. For those who don't know Marnie Nixon also dubbed Audrey Hepburn (Eliza) in My Fair Lady and Deborah Kerr (Anna) in King and I. So I repeat what I quoted earlier: Is Marnie Nixon still alive/available? ;D BTW: Richard Beymer (Tony) was also dubbed by Jimmy Bryant As for Taylor, there's some pretty funny parodies on YouTube. I already posted the best. But here are a couple others: -- Don't you fret, Marius ... it's a love story-- What the Buck (warning: Rated PG13) (Watch the until 2:40) Back to Hugh: After watching that first video I can see him working well for the less songy songs (I know what I mean!!). Also, he can also probably get away with having a rougher voice due to the character. I can see him working well in the role. Well, most of the recitative in Les Mis is being cut for the film so it will mix talking and singing rather than being entirely sung through. For those who haven't seen this on my LiveJournal: Tom Hooper on BBC4 (Thursday). Unfortunately no casting confirmations, but Hooper discuss the format of the film. And he tells us that there will be a new song. (Hooper's part starts 7 minutes in and ends around 13:30) I found a better song of Hugh from Sunset BLVD with Debra Byrne (who was Fantine on the CSR). Still not what I want for Valjean but better than the other clip:

*whistles* Wow, she's skinny. Well, I guess with a bit of smudge make-up she'll definitely look the part of a starving waif.
I'm unfamiliar with her as a singer/actress so am trying (and possibly failing) to keep an open mind...

I hesitate to severely criticize anyone for their singing (I'm tone deaf, so at the end of the day I just can't tell whether they hit the right note or not) but something about that her rendition sounded a teensy bit... off.
I'm now wishing they'd cast Lea Michele instead. I might be tired of hearing her version of 'On My Own' but at least she can for sure sing Broadway.

That comment made me choke on my tea (goodness I do love being a stereotypical Brit) although the link wont work for me, sadly!
