I have only seens two movie versions of Les Miserables. The first one is from 1998 with Liam Neeson as Valjean and Geoffrey Rush as Javert. The second one is french with Gérard Depardieu as Valjean and John Malkovich as Javert. I quite like the 1998 version(and is hasn't Eponine in it, which I like. I never liked her, I have to admit), but the french version is closer to the novel.

I've only seen the 1998 version which you reference. That one is a personal favorite of mine. Shall have to check out the French version if I can find a copy of it.
Wonder if they'll ever make a film version of the musical?

I think there's talk about making a movie version of the musical. If it was made the right way, I think it would be great.

I haven't seen any of the film versions (other than the two filmed concerts which don't count!) although I do have one of them sitting downstairs. It hasn't even been near my dvd player - I have too many films to watch. I think it's the French one although I'm not sure.

Actually, that is in the works, or so I hear. *fingers crossed* That would be awesome! Who would you cast for the film version if you could? Well, I am an enormous Colm Wilkinson fan, but he may be too old (gasp!) for the role now. So my second choice would either go to the Valjean of the 25th Anniversary Concert - sorry I can't recall his name at the moment - or John Owen-Jones. For Marius, Ramin Karimloo would do very well, if he tones his angst down a bit. Although, if I were in LND, I'd be mad at life too. Gavroche was so wonderful in the 25th, as well. Don't know that much about the ladies, though, I'm not head over heels for Lea Salonga...

ALFIE BOE!!! Ahem, I love him <3 However, I will not hear anything said against Lea Salonga, I grew up idolising her as 'Ponine! Actually, I agree that she was weak as Fantine... XD Seeing Colm in the 25th concert - he could do it so well! Valjean isn't a young man either so he'd look the part. His voice really wasn't boosted in the DVD, he was that epic in real life (I had the honor of being at the concert)

By all accounts, he WAS a great Marius - he played him in West End for a while. Who chose Nick Jonas over him as Marius, I'll never know... actually, I'd rather see ANYBODY as Marius than him. It's not his style, he can't understand the role... and he kept being vocally overshadowed by everyone, which amused me not a little. I apologize to those who liked him, but I certainly did not.
You went? That's wonderful. I hate not living in England. Ridiculous. Yes, Mr. Boe grew on me - I did not much care for him at first, but then changed my mind. A wonderful, gentle Valjean. Owen-Jones is a bit too aggressive sometimes. Or hysterical. You pick.
Regarding Colm - don't get me wrong, I'd adore any recording of his. I love his Valjean, no one will ever equal it. But I thought - and I may be splitting hairs here - that his voice shook just a tiny bit. It's still massive, but not quite as sure-footed, if you get my meaning. But just thinking about a Les Miserables movie with him makes me tingle. In fact, were Micheal Ball to play Marius, I'd ignore his age completely. I know I'm obsessed, but what can you do?
Lea Salonga - correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't she Eponine in the 10th Anniversary concert? There she did shine... I think you are right and Fantine just doesn't belong to her. Or it wasn't her night to be Fantine... Things like that do happen.
And what did you think of the Thernadiers? I don't know if I liked them all that much...

Oh, Nick Jonas was even more overshadowed live. I think they edited the balance on the mic on the DVD to make him louder. He has grown on my though because I always saw Marius as quite soft whereas I found Micheal Ball to be too strong for the role. I think that's just my own perception of the role though. I love Micheal Ball ^^
I don't think I could find a complaint against Colm to be honest. Actually, if you think about it, he'd be coming out from backstage to sing that cold - it was my father who pointed that out to me. I'm really impressed hehe!
Lea played Fantine in the States, right? Has anyone heard her singing there... I do think that 'Ponine was just her role though - she was perfect for it.
I loved the Thernadiers. Mme T was the same as in the 10th and she just was so comfortable in the role, M T was so different to others but I think he needed to be like that to make the role his own - if not we'd just compare him to others.
My Cast (I'll edit it as I think of more!) Jean Valjean - Alfie Boe Javert Bishop Fantine Young Cosette Mme Thenardier - Jenny Galloway Thenardier - Alun Armstrong Gavroche - Robert Madge Enjolras - Ramin Karimloo Marius Eponine - Samantha Barks Cosette - Katie Hall

I always imagined Michael Ball as Marius. In some ways, he just IS Marius to me. But Ramin would be a better choice if you go for a younger Marius, which it really should be if they make a movie version of the musical.

Try though I might I can't think up a full dream cast listing. So I'll just post a partial list... Jean Valjean- John Barrowman(?) Fantine- Ruthie Henshall or Sierra Boggess Enjolras- Ramin Karimloo Marius- Keith Jack(?) Eponine- Niamh Perry or Samantha Barks Not sure if JB is old enough to play Valjean yet. Then again, perhaps if he stopped dyeing his hair...
