Hello all, I just joined so this is only my second post. But I have been a glutton for English Rebecca news over on the Livejournal forum. And I see that we at Livejournal have found some things that you don't have. So what is better than sharing? Sorry this may get long. +++ The reading in New York was March 18 and ShowBiz411 had this to say about it: Meanwhile: “Rebecca,” the world famous Daphne DuMaurier novel, is coming to Broadway as a musical. Once an Alfred Hitchcock movie, “Rebecca” with all her dark secrets and melodrama, seems like a grand idea for the “Les Miz” and “Phantom” set. On Friday, an invited audience of Broadway elite got to see a special concert presentation of “Rebecca.” It won’t come to Broadway until next year some time, but from the looks of things it’s very polished and continues being tweaked. I can’t actually review a show on this basis, but I will tell you that Carolee Carmello, from “The Addams Family,” was stunning as spooky caretaker of Manderley, the famed estate from “Rebecca.” If this makes it to Broadway in 2012, Carmello will head straight to raves and a Tony nomination. She’s that good. So nice to know that next year’s shows are already shaping up! (emphasis mine) +++ Carolee Carmello talked about preparing for the reading on her Blog (scroll down). As this was posted before the reading, so I am assuming Carolee was not yet briefed on the history of the show, which may be why she seemed surprised by the advanced knowledge of other people. +++ And meganphntmgrl on Livejournal saw Phantom with Hugh Panaro shortly after the Rebecca reading. He was kind enough to answer a few questions. I'd have to ask her permission to post the interview here. But I think she won't mind me saying that Hugh told her that the songs "Die lieben Verwandten (The Dear Relations)" and "I'm An American Woman" were not included in the reading -- or rather, when she described the songs to him he got very confused and didn't know what she was talking about. +++ And Sierra Boggess had a few more tweets than are listed above from her Twitter account. Very little information but for what it's worth: I'm enjoying singing new material today! And overlooking 42nd street! Welcome home to me!!!! X 7:38 AM Mar 15th via Twitter for iPhone Rehearsed with the lovely Hugh Panaro today!! No! They cannot have cut 'I'm an American Woman'. I will not stand for this! (Yeah, because anyone cares what I think hehe)
I'm really excited to see this on the stage now. It seems to be being taking more seriously than Tanz (thank goodness) and I'm interested as to whether it will really catch on.

I am actually starting to think that this may be part of their decision to move to New York. Although at first I was afraid of DotV associations in NY I actually think this may be the better move. I was reading a load of bad comments about Rebecca on the B'way world boards. And the theater they had booked, the Shaftesbury Theatre, aside from having a poor location, has a reputation for producing flops. Francesca Zambello had directed Napoleon there and it flopped. Then add in the fact that Napoleon was a DramaMusical with Uwe Krüger in it; there were probably too many bad associations that may have been tagged to Rebecca = Rebecca is just another Napoleon-esque Shafesbury flop. (btw: Although flawed, Napoleon is actually a pretty good show. I has quite an enjoyable score.) Anyway, by moving to New York and doing and industry reading right off, I think they're trying to prevent bad karma -- at least bad karma coming from the industry level.

Yeah. They were trying to do London before they even went to the US with Rebecca (though fate was against that) and thinking about it, that was most likely for the same reason.
Oh, talking of which, has anyone got any idea about what happened to the song 'We Are British'? I'd be interested to see if that made it to the English language show!

No idea, but I'm glad that songs are being paired down.

I had asked meganphntmgrl on Livejournal to ask Hugh, but she forgot. So can't say one way or the other yet with certainly. However if those other two songs have been cut I think "Wir sind Britisch" has to be a goner. Or at the least been replaced by another song or lyrics. I hope it's gone, actually it's the only song in the show that I dislike. It tries to be "Die frühliche Apocalypse" from Elisabeth but it doesn't quite make it.

I hope they include a good english version of Mrs de Winter bin Ich. It's one of my favourite songs and the English demo ruined it in my opinion.

HOLD EVERYTHING!!! Rebecca loses its staircase, gains a theater: "A $16 million musical production of “Rebecca,” based on the classic 1938 novel by Daphne du Maurier, has been scaled down to a budget of about $12 million — largely thanks to the loss of a collapsing staircase special effect — and is now on track for Broadway, the producers announced on Tuesday. Preview performances at a Shubert theater still to be named are scheduled to begin March 27, 2012, with an opening night set for April 22. ...
“'We don’t want to say too much so we don’t spoil the magic,' Mr. Sprecher said, 'but rest assured we are going to burn Manderley eight times a week.'”Source: The New York Times: ‘Rebecca’ to Sing, Manderley to Burn on BroadwayAlso, Broadway.com: Musical Version of Rebecca Sets Broadway Dates; Sierra Boggess Eyes Starring RoleObservations:-- I'm interested to see they are wanting to do body burns on B'way. I guess with them losing the staircase they don't want to lose much else. I'll be curious to see what they add as far as visual effects go. -- Also interesting is the wording Sprecher gave for why Blakemore was brought in: “to focus especially on bringing the book scenes and the performances to life.” -- The B'way.com article said: "The musical had its world premiere in 2006 at Vereinigte Buhnen Wien in Vienna" -- That's redundant! ;-) (emphasis mine) As we wait for the official word on the theater ... Wait a second! They've got rid of the effect that meant it couldn't play in London? For goodness sake bring it back!! I have absolutely nothing against Broadway but that's just so unfair As for loosing the collapsing staircase - I don't think that happened in the Budapest version and I thought that was stronger than the Vienna one so I'm not too sad about that. It does seem like they're going for a more fire route too which should be interesting.

Wait a second! They've got rid of the effect that meant it couldn't play in London? For goodness sake bring it back!! I have absolutely nothing against Broadway but that's just so unfair There's been a lot of debate as to the merits (and lack of merits) of both London and New York. And believe me, I have no idea what the best option really is. In many ways I feel that London audiences may be more receptive to the show. In any case I hope it goes to London soon. But on the other hand, I'm really glad Rebecca won't be at The Shaftesbury. Both the poor location on the West End and its history of flops (one with a connection to Francesca Zambello) would have been an unnecessary burden for the show to carry. Humorously speaking, Hungary, Germany, Switzerland, Austria etc ... are a lot closer to you all in the UK than me. Keep in mind that for me, even though I'm American, New York is 4 time zones away (Vienna is 9). So most of you are closer to a production than me.

The rumor I've heard is that she doesn't want to leave Europe. There have been no official casting announcements. Although there have been casting notices for the Broadway cast. All roles are up for audition, even "I."

Just in case anyone here missed this: New York Times: ‘Rebecca’ Musical Gets a Theater and a StarAnd it looks like Carolee Carmello won't be Mrs. Danvers on Broadway. She'll be playing Mother Superior in Sister Act instead. While she was never "official" she did perform the role in the last reading and was seen as a favorite for the part by many. I've seen a rumor on broadwayworld.com's message board that James Barbour will be Maxim and Karen Mason Mrs.Danvers but that's just a rumor.
