A lot of fans of the book (and the musical, I suppose) have said that the new mrs. DeWinter should be with Frank rather than Maxim because they are more like kindred spirits and he treats her properly. I definetly see how alike Ich and Frank are, but Ich and Maxim will always be my preference. He's just misunderstood, and even though he's a good guy at the end of it, he's not really the same kind of character as Frank. I felt a great deal of sympathy for Maxim for marrying Rebecca and having to live with her, and then having to live with the guilt of killing her, even though she wanted it and certainly deserved it. By the way, there's a nice little fanfic about Ich and Frank. The story starts with Maxim actually getting sentenced to death for Rebecca's murder, and Frank comes to see Ich a few years after. www.fanfiction.net/s/4283222/1/

Tbh the Ich/Frank pairing never even occurred to me. Probably because Ich is so overwhelmingly in love with Maxim. The idea is an interesting interpretation though...
Even though she is dead throughout the story, I actually think Rebecca is my favorite character. She may well have been evil, but since she is dead and can't speak for herself....*shrugs* The fact that all we have to go on, in regards to her true nature, are the personal opinions of people who didn't like her makes me a bit suspicious. She just seems like such a strong and impassioned woman, which in those days and in that social circle probably caused problems for her.... Wish more of her side of the story could be told.

I am really not so sure there. I think we know enough about Rebecca to judge her to a certain extend. We know from Maxim (whom I trust on this) that she was unfaithful and didn't care about anything or anyone but herself. Mrs. Danvers, who adores her and would never lie about her, says that love was just a game for Rebecca and that she really despised men and made fun of them. And if she was hanging out with Jack Favell, well... She certainly had some qualities to be admired(her lust for life, her style and grace), but she's far from a saint, and it will take a lot to convince me otherwise. Perhaps if we were told more about her, things would look different, but I doubt it will change all that much. She did do some wrong things. Perhaps I am not so against your ideas after all? Or am I just rambling along for no reason?

I agree with both of you to be fair in so much as Rebecca doing a lot of hurtful things and downright wrong things. Still, I would love to learn a lot more about her character and what made her act that way. I don't think she was evil but still. I think that's one of the clever things about du Maurier - she leaves mystery around even her main characters in most of her stories... I guess it's similar to not giving I a name.
As for pairings, I never thought of the Ich Frank pairing either. I think Maxim and I are right for one another and complete one another with I being able to heal Maxim to a certain degree and I being so totally in love with Maxim.

I think it was also just given that it had to be them. From the very beginning there was a connection between them, and Ich is completly in love with Maxim and he also really cares about her. And I agree that they complete each other. I also think that Ich and Frank are too much alike to have a relationship. I mean, are they just going to smile, be nice, and agree with each other all the time, and let the other one have her/his way?
