I relistened to this over Easter and then watched the film for the first time a few days ago. I've seen it on stage, but it was years ago, so I don't remember it very well. What really struck me was how differently Pilate is played in different productions. I love Barry Dennen in the film and on the album, but I was quite intrigued by Fred Johanson's nazi-roman hybrid pilate in the 2000 version. I still prefer Dennen though. Does anyone have an opinion on this.

I must say that I actually hate the 1973 version. I have never got far enough to meet Pilate in it! I know people love it but SORRY! I have seen the Madach Production of the show too.
In that one, Pilate was a bit wishy washy, I think. He seemed like a bit of a non character. However, I'm not sure how much that was because I didn't know the musical before seeing the Hungarian and it was a little hard to work out who he really was - especially in the dream scene (great production though).
What I like about the 70's film one, from that video, is how he seems to cool and refined, particularly at the start. One has to wonder how much the "don't let me stop your great self destruction" etc damaged his throat!
However, my favourite is certainly the 2000 version. He's powerful, he's in control, but he's emotional. I love the way that you can see so much depth in his character... this facade that he puts up, his insecurities.

Not a big fan of the '73 film over all, especially the man who does Jesus. Bring back Ian Gillian and Murray head from the album. You should watch the first bit that Pilate is in, it's good too. The "who is this broken man, cluttering up my hallway" bit. It's good in both productions

Oh, I watched the first bit. Got to Judas singing the opening and then skipped through to see how the other main singers were... decided I couldn't bear to continue. It's really sad because I figure that it is good if so many people like it but I just can't watch it... ah well
I will look that song up; I must admit that scene, although maybe the last supper gives it a run for its money, is my favourite.
