Something that has been an annoyance for many fans is the name of the new mrs. De Winter. I have also found it annoying that she has no name, even though that is part of the story and her development. But we do get a little hint as to what her name is in the book as I recall. I don't remember precisely how or when it's mentioned, but her name's supposed to be unusual and hard to say. I have seen an Italian adaptation of the story, which is very enjoyable though not true to the book, and she's given the name Jennifer. So, what are your thoughts on this? What could a likely name for her be?

Yes, in the book she says that Maxim after their first meeting wrote her a note with her name "spelt correctly, an unusual thing." I have no idea what her name was Daphne du Maurier is the only one who does and she's dead But it does show again that "Ich" is very unique, and if she would tap into that she could have her own strengths but for so much of the story she feels overwhelmed by the legend of Rebecca and looses sight of her own uniqueness. On a personal note I have to say that I can relate to her problem, people rarely spell my real name correctly. At least now they seem to be pronouncing it right, this was not always the case in years past. On the first day of school the teacher almost always butchered it. So I guess, if had to pick a name for "Ich" I'll give her my name

...And her uniqness is what Maxim loves about her, I am sure. It also, again, puts her in contrast to Rebecca, who has a nice name, but it's quite common and has nothing fancy about it. God, those two women really are polar opposites, aren't they? Oh, it's hard when people can't get your name right, isn't it? I have experienced that a few times myself when my name is being spelled, and I had a class mate with an unusual last name, and when we graduated, the head master said it wrong when we were handed over diploma I felt sorry for him there.

I read something a while ago that said something about Ich having no name but a description and Rebecca having a name but her appearance is never described (except for saying that she was beautiful). I never really gave Mrs de Winter a name when I read Rebecca, but I feel the first person narrative makes the reader really feel as though they are Ich, so they think of themselves as the character.
