This is pretty interesting! ----------- Source: www.variety.com/article/VR1118034746'Phantom' to tour in new production Mackintosh to produce new staging for launch in early 2012 By DAVID BENEDICT "The Phantom of the Opera" Cameron Mackintosh will mount a brand new production of legit blockbuster "Phantom of the Opera" for a worldwide tour in early 2012. Hal Prince's original 1986 production has been seen by more than 100 million people worldwide. With a gross approaching $5 billion, it's the world's biggest-grossing single entertainment. Following an agreement with Prince, Mackintosh told Variety that the Andrew Lloyd Webber tuner will be produced in an all-new version. Helmed by Laurence Connor, it will feature new sets and costumes by Paul Brown and lighting by three-time Olivier Award winner Paule Constable. Although all further details remain under wraps, Mackintosh said the production will open at a regional U.K. house. Its trajectory will then mimic that of his new, similarly rescaled production of "Les Miserables," also helmed by Connor, which is currently on a three-year world tour that regularly breaks box office records.

I heard that the touring shows are becoming expensive to produced and this maybe the reason for a new production. Maybe.
But I think that PotO needs to change a bit after 20+ years makes for great theatre!

I think that change is good for any production. It would be nice if it's done in a new way and then the old direction is brought back for a while so it's fresh again though.

I wonder would the new show reflect the 2004 movie, like the Las Vegas Spectacular. I can't say personally but I haven't seen that production, but I heard it's shorter and that it's not too bad. www.phantomlasvegas.com/

Have we got any more news on this at all? I saw a poster that I thought was about it at the airport but didn't get to look properly.
